2008-08-23

Gemius SA presents the most popular web browsers for five selected countries in Central and Eastern Europe, i.e. the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. According to the gemiusTraffic research, for example in Ukraine the share of page views done by local visitors with the use of the Opera web browser amounts to 25.4 percent.

The popularity of web browsers is presented thanks to the data obtained from the gemiusTraffic research. The research conducted by Gemius SA is designed to deliver up-to-date and reliable information about internet users behaviour on  the Web and the technical solutions they use. The research is carried out in five countries: Poland, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Hungary and Ukraine.

According to the gemiusTraffic research, from July 2007 to July 2008 the percentage of page views performed by web browsers of the MSIE group dropped throughout the region. The highest decline was noticed in Ukraine – it amounted to 16.3 percentage points. In Lithuania the share of page views generated by this kind of web browsers decreased by 11.3 percentage points, in Poland – by 10.3 percentage points and in Hungary – by 8.8 percentage points. The lowest decrease (6.8 percentage points) was observed in the Czech Republic. Gemius research shows that in that country the share of page views performed by the MSIE web browsers group was the highest and it reached 64.6 percent in July 2008.

During the analysed 12 months, web browsers from the Firefox group were developing dynamically. Numerous updates of 2.0 version and the launch of Firefox 3 in June 2008 had a great impact causing a significant increase in the number of page views generated through this kind of web browsers in the countries where the gemiusTraffic research is carried out. Between July 2007 and July 2008 the share of page views performed by different versions of this browser increased by 10.2 percentage points in Lithuania, by 9.6 percentage points in Poland, by 9.1 percentage points in Hungary, and last but not least, by nearly 6 percentage points in the Czech Republic and in Ukraine. In July 2008 the highest usage level of Firefox group web browsers was noted in Poland (40.5 percent).

Opera browsers are the most popular amidst the Ukrainians. In July 2007 the percentage of page views registered by gemiusTraffic and generated through this browser group amounted to 15.3 percent. It grew steadily through subsequent months and reached 25.4 percent.

This is the only  spectacular upsurge in the usage level of the Opera group browsers. In the Czech Republic the share of page views performed through this browser grew only by 3 percentage points within the analysed 12 months. In Lithuania the increase reached 1 percentage point, and in Poland did not surpass 1 percentage point. In Hungary the percentage stayed nearly at the same level.
